Step Falls in Newry, Maine

Step Falls Preserve is a waterfall & swimming hole gem in Western Maine near Grafton Notch State Park.

While most swimming holes only have one waterfall and pool, Step Falls is actually a series of small waterfalls, many that you can slide down into refreshing (cold) pools.

That’s great because this spot gets a lot of visitors during weekends in the summer but there’s plenty of space to spread out.

Directions to Step Falls

The parking lot for the trail to the falls is located at 1657 Bear River Rd in Newry, a short distance from other attractions like Screw Auger Falls and the hiking trails in Grafton Notch State Park.

Hiking Trail

It’s an easy and very pleasant 1 mile walk through the woods on a well established trail to the waterfalls.

Wear a bathing suit and water shoes (such as Teva) and pack a picnic that you can enjoy on the rocks.  Step Falls is an especially satisfying place to visit after hiking the Old Speck Mountain, the Eyebrow trail or Table Rock in Grafton Notch State Park.
