If you’ll be visiting Maine’s woods for a family vacation, fly fishing, hunting, or just to relax in nature and you want something more comfortable than a traditional campground, there are a number of nice sporting camps, wilderness lodges and log cabins to stay at in Maine.

Many of the properties listed feature cabins with multiple bedrooms, making them very cost effective for larger groups.

At several of the properties, three meals per day are included in the price, as well as free use of canoes.

Almost all of the cabins are located on a pond, lake, river or stream, near the mountains, with varying degrees of modern conveniences like electricity and running water.  Don’t count on cell service or WiFi, and for most people that’s a good thing!

Plus it’s all about the experience, and what better way to experience Maine?!

Here’s a list of the best camps, lodges and cabins that I’ve found:

100 Mile Wilderness

The “100 Mile Wilderness” is an off-the-grid area between Monson (southeast of Moosehead Lake) and Mount Katahdin in the highlands of Central Maine.  Home of dirt roads, the Appalachian Trail, hiking trails, great ponds for paddling and fishing, more moose than people and very limited electricity or cell phone reception.

AMC Wilderness Lodges

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) owns 3 wilderness lodges in the 100 Mile Wilderness region of Maine near Moosehead Lake.

The lodges are open year-round and can be driven to on dirt roads in the summer and fall.  In the winter, you can drive to their new Medawisla Lodge, but the other two lodges are ski-in only.

Dinner, breakfast and a trail lunch are included in the rates.  All lodges offer free use of canoes and kayaks on nearby ponds in the summer, as well as cross country skiing trails in the winter.  The rates posted are for non-AMC-members but discounted rates are given to AMC members.

Little Lyford Lodge, the oldest of the three, is located north of Gulf Hagas.  Summer rates are $101/adult per night in a shared 12-person bunkhouse or $150/adult per night for a private cabin sleeping 1 to 6 people.

Each cabin has a porch, wood stove and gas lamps.  The central bunkhouse has composting toilets and hot showers year-round, as well as a wood-heated sauna in the winter.  Up to 2 dogs are welcome for a $10/night fee.

Gorman Chairback is located on Pond Pond, south of Gulf Hagas and Little Lyford Lodge.  Summer rates are $116/adult per night in a shared 10-person bunkhouse or $178/adult per night for a private cabin.

Each cabin has a wood stove and gas lamps.  The central bunkhouse has composting toilets, hot showers, and a wood-heated sauna.  There is no running water, but water jugs are provided.

Medawisla is the newest of the three and is located north of Moosehead Lake and Kokadjo, on Second Roach Pond.  Medawisla is the only property that offers a bunkhouse and cabins with self-service kitchenettes, as well as cabins and bunkhouses with meals included.

Summer rates are as follows:
$80/adult per night in a self-service bunkhouse
$109/adult per night in a bunkhouse with meals included
$100/adult per night in a self-service cabin
$162/adult per night in a cabin with meals included

All cabins have electric LED lighting and a wood stove.  The central lodge includes a dining room, sitting area, deck and sauna.  Dogs are only welcome in designated cabins in the winter.

West Branch Pond Camps

West Branch Pond Camps

West Branch Pond Camps are located in Maine’s 100 Mile Wilderness, north-east of Moosehead Lake and Kokadjo.  The camps are situated on First West Branch Pond, a great spot for seeing moose and other wildlife as well as fly fishing, and close to White Cap Mountain on the Appalachian Trail.

Rates are $125/adult per night and include breakfast, lunch and dinner (the food is amazing!), as well as a boat, firewood and linens in the summer.  Discounted rates for children.

Each of the nine cabins offers full and twin beds, a screened porch, water views, wood stove, electric lights from their generator from 6pm to 10pm and includes a bathroom w/ hot water & a shower in the summer.

Nahmakanta Lake Wilderness Camps

Nahmakanta Lake Wilderness Camps - 100 Mile Wilderness Maine

Nahmakanta Lake Wilderness Camps are located in Maine’s 100 Mile Wilderness, south of Baxter State Park and the Debsconeag Lakes Wilderness Area.  This is a very remote area; accessed by driving for many miles on dirt roads or flying in on a sea plane (15 minute flight from Millinocket).  The Nahmakanta area is great for hiking, fishing, boating, and viewing wildlife.

Nahmakanta Lake Wilderness Camps have nine rustic lakefront cabins accommodating between 2-8 people.  All cabins include gas fridges, ranges and lamps, well water, pots, pans, dishes and utensils, mattresses and linens and wood stoves and outside is a charcoal grill, picnic table and campfire ring.

Each cabin also has a designated private bathroom in a separate building with flush toilets and hot showers, an unexpected luxury in such a remote location.

They offer 3 different plans to meet your needs:

  • The American Plan is $170/adult per night and includes breakfast, supper and a box lunch.
  • The Modified American Plan is $135/adult per night and includes supper only.
  • The Housekeeping Plan is $100/adult per night, and does not include any meals.

Rates are lower for children under 17.  Some dogs welcome at an extra cost of $20/stay but you must call first.  All plans also include use of canoes and/or kayaks on Nahmakanta Lake as well as nearby backcountry lakes.
