Education

In order to be accepted into Uconn's acclaimed school of business, I had to maintain above a 3.0 GPA during my first two years of course work which included challenging courses like Calculus, Statistics, Economics, and Accounting. Today my cumulative GPA is a 3.4 and I have been included in the Dean’s List twice, which required getting above a 3.6 GPA.

I loved doing group projects in college because it was an opportunity for me to really “wow” my professors and my classmates with the amount of work I did, the insights I had in the subject matter and my ability to create professional power point presentations. Many times I would naturally adopt the leadership role in group projects. The numerous presentations that I've delivered in my classes have helped me to become very comfortable with public speaking and using power point.

I’ve always loved to learn about business. While other students might be falling asleep or texting their friends during lectures, I'm soaking everything up like a sponge. In addition to reading the assigned text books in my courses, I also enjoy reading about business on my own. My favorite books are Paco Underhill's Why We Buy and Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People". As a matter of fact, when I was in high school and my sister was studying marketing in college, I would read through her marketing text books when she came home for the weekend. That’s why I chose marketing as my major. I've always loved the subject. I even took two marketing courses and a personal finance course while I was in high school.

Student Organizations

I participated in Uconn's National Student Exchange during the Spring '06 semester at the University of South Carolina. This was an exciting opportunity for me to be able to experience an entirely new culture and go from a rural campus to an urban downtown campus. I couldn't be more happy for doing it. I loved the beautiful campus, I loved the weather, I built new relationships with people from all over the country, and I took interesting courses at the Darla Moore School of Business.

I joined the American Marketing Association in my Senior year while I was studying at the University of South Carolina because it was a good opportunity for me to meet others who share my interest in marketing. We had guest speakers from companies including Prudential Realtors, 1st Choice Mortgage, Ryan Homes, Ferguson Enterprises, and Gamecock Sports Properties. They all discussed their industries, how they got started, and answered our questions about job searching. I will continue my membership in the American Marketing Association when I return to the University of Connecticut.

Favorite Courses:

Personal Selling & Sales Management
This course focused on the steps of the selling process, with an emphasis on selling to retail buyers and managers. I completed case studies in which I examined problems that companies were facing with their sales staff and did role playing in which I was trying to sell a new brand to a buyer of a large retail organization. We also had guest speakers who were pharmaceutical sales representatives of Lilly.

Principles of Advertising
The focus of this course was on integrated marketing communication and the latest trends in advertising. We examined the various types of marketing communication, the various types of media used for advertising and the growing role of the Internet. Guest speakers included the makers of Bud Light's award winning "Magic Fridge" commercial.

Marketing Research
In this course we examined the various types of market research that exist and steps that companies take before launching a new products. Guest speakers included employees of BASES, a division of Nielson. I find market research to be a fascinating subject.

Consumer Behavior
We covered a lot of information in this course. We studied what motivates consumers to make purchases, how they develop attitudes about brands, and the influence of their culture and their social class.. We also studied psychographic techniques (VALS) and PRIZM segmentation and did perceptual mapping exercise to identify opportunities for new products.

Managerial Communication
This was one of the most useful courses that I've taken. Each week we either had a written assignment or had to make a presentation in the board room. Written assignments included creating professional memorandums addressed to employees and writing proposals to prospective clients. We also did two group projects in which we made powerpoint presentations. In the first, we recommended changes to Bernie's Electronics web site in order to make it more effective. In the second, we analyzed the stock of Southwest Airlines.
