Moosehead’s Eagle Rock Trail Hike

The Eagle Rock Trail near Moosehead Lake in Greenville Maine was a lot tougher than I anticipated. The 7 mile out-and-back hike took me 5 hours to complete, and although the elevation gain is technically only 900 feet, my GPS tracker registered a total ascent of 1,749 feet because of all of the ups and downs during the hike. The views are great from the rock summit as well as the viewpoint at Raven’s Ledge, but you’ll be deep in the woods for the rest of the hike. This is a tough one!

Finding The Trail Head

From the blinking light in the center of Greenville travel north 5.1 miles on Route 6/15. Turn onto the North Road (a dirt road) marked by a sign for Maine Public Reserve Lands – Little Moose Unit. At 8.7 miles turn onto the East Moore Bog Road. At 10.1 miles you will see a gravel parking lot on the right.

The Hike

Leaving the trail head, you’ll walk a third of a mile and then cross the gravel road to continue the trail. This wasn’t well marked, and I ended up walking up the road until it stopped and then retracing my steps and finding the small cairn for the trail continuation across the road. Don’t make that mistake!

The elevation begins to climb after crossing the road and making your way through the woods. It’s a well cleared dirt trail with no rock steps or boulders or anything like that, but it’s a looooong walk through the woods.

The Eagle Rock trail through the woods

At just under 3 miles, you’ll reach the side trail to Raven Ledge which offers nice views of Indian Pond on a steep cliff.

Continue for about another mile and you’ll reach the large rock outcropping of Eagle Rock with views expansive of Indian Pond and Moosehead Lake. The views were incredible, even on a dreary cloudy day. The fall foliage colors never hurt the view either!

View of Moosehead Lake from Eagle Rock

I encountered only one other group of hikers on my trip on October 14th, 2017, and they had come up the old trail from the other side of Eagle Rock, which is much shorter 3-mile round-trip hike but no longer maintained.

The trail head for this older trail is accessed on the rough Burnham Pond Road with a small sign that’s apparently easy to miss. Read Aislinn’s review of this trail if you’re interested in learning more.

Moosehead Pinnacle Pursuit

The trail described here is one of six hikes that make up the Moosehead Pinnacle Pursuit challenge. The other five hikes, in order of difficulty from easiest to hardest (in my opinion), are Mount KineoBorestone MountainNumber Four Mountain, Big Moose Mountain, and Whitecap Mountain. The Eagle Rock trail is one of the more challenging hikes in this challenge, in my opinion, but only due to its length.
